Details people get wrong
- Which states raise the minimum wage on January 1, 2027?
- Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Washington. Vermont’s increase is set by statute but the amount had not been published at the last check. The table lists each new rate with a link to the state’s own source.
- Is New York’s minimum wage going up in 2027?
- No. New York was due to start indexing to inflation in 2027, but a statutory off-ramp was triggered, so the rate stays at $17.00 in New York City, Long Island and Westchester and $16.00 elsewhere. Many sites still show an increase.
- Why do Alaska, Oregon and DC show a July date?
- They change mid-year. Alaska rises to $15.00 on July 1, 2027 under its statutory schedule. Oregon and DC adjust every July 1 for inflation and publish the amount in the spring, so their 2027 figures are not out yet.
- What if my city has a higher minimum wage?
- The higher rate applies. Cities and counties including Seattle, Denver, Chicago and much of the San Francisco Bay Area set their own minimums above the state rate. This page covers state rates only.
